Sometimes the best bonding happens while we are sleeping!
I rescued my calico kitty, Chloe, from the ASPCA when she was two years old. Though she's not the most affectionate house pet, probably due to her previous hard knock life as a street cat, she loves being in the same room with us and settles in between my feet every night at bedtime. I depend on her soft purrs to lull me to sleep.

Juanita, a donkey, minds the goats on my friend’s organic farm and she seems to really enjoy when I stop by to say hello, even if forget to bring along her favorite: carrots.

About the Author
As President and CEO of The Humane Society of United States, the world’s largest animal protection organization, Wayne Pacelle is a passionate defender of animals and an inspiration to millions of supporters and advocates. He's seen cruelty and compassion up close in his work, and he writes about the timeless but still ever-changing bond between humans and animals. He explores how that bond has been broken in so many ways in the industrial era and presents ways we can all make a difference and live together in a more humane society.

Founded in 1954, The Humane Society of the United States is dedicated to combating cruelties to animals of a national scope through public education, promoting enforcement of humane laws, assisting local humane societies, conducting research and investigations, advocating for law reform, and changing corporate behavior. The HSUS and its affiliates also provide veterinary services to remote areas, rescue animals in natural disasters and incidents of large-scale cruelty, and operate a network of centers that directly care for thousands of animals each year. The HSUS family of organizations is supported by more than 11 million people nationwide. Learn more at www.humanesociety.org, and join the humane movement.
