Additionally, photos containing imagery inconsistent with these guidelines, or include hunting imagery, pregnant or unaltered animals, or animals that appear unhealthy, neglected, homeless, or in danger may be deemed ineligible.

If your entry is rejected, it will be removed from the contest and we'll notify you by email. Any votes your photo received before being removed from the contest will be disqualified. Photographs must be in digital format. Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted for entry into this Contest. ENTRY PERIOD

The Contest will commence on 3/1/2011 (9 a.m. ET). The last entry will be accepted on 4/4/2011 (5:00 p.m. ET). During this time period, registered users will be able to vote for photos. Users may vote for a photo once a day. Entrants may not vote for their own photos.

SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS

Judging will be done in two rounds. The first round will be determined by public voting on www.thebondcontest.com. The second round will be determined by a panel of HarperCollins employees.

ROUND ONE (Public Voting): Public voting will begin on 3/1/2011 (9 a.m. ET) and end on 4/4/2011 (5:00 p.m. ET). Registered users will vote for the photo submissions that best represent the bond between humans and animals. Users may vote for a photo twice per day. The 20 photos with the most votes will be deemed "Finalists" and will move on to round two. In the event that there are less than 20 Submissions, all Submissions will move to round two.

For purposes of the Contest, a "vote" means a vote cast on the Website, by a "unique voter". A "unique voter" is an individual person (a) who has registered on the Website and (b) with unique registration information (i.e., email address) that is not duplicative of another voter. A unique voter may vote no more than once each day for a unique photograph. If HarperCollins determines, in its sole discretion, that an abuse of the "unique voter" rule has occurred, HarperCollins may disqualify votes cast by such voters or contestants, including if more than 5 of such voters or contestants registered from the same computer "IP address". In the event of a tie, a panel of judges who are HarperCollins Publishers employees will determine the finalist based on the overall presentation of the tied entries. Judges' decisions are final, binding and conclusive on all matters related to the Contest.

ROUND TWO (Final Judging): Finalist Submissions will be judged by a panel of HarperCollins employees on the basis of: subject matter of the photo relevant to the theme of the bond between humans and animals and emotional impact of the overall photo, with each criterion receiving equal weight. In the event of a tie, a panel of judges who are HarperCollins employees will determine the winners based on the overall presentation of the tied entries. Judges' decisions are final, binding and conclusive on all matters related to the Contest.

Winners will be chosen on or about 4/06/2011. All potential winners will be notified by e-mail. Potential winners may be required to sign and return to HarperCollins an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability (the "Affidavit"), and, if the Affidavit is not returned within 14 days of notification, the potential winner will be deemed to have forfeited the prize, and an alternate potential winner will be chosen.

About the Author
As President and CEO of The Humane Society of United States, the world’s largest animal protection organization, Wayne Pacelle is a passionate defender of animals and an inspiration to millions of supporters and advocates. He's seen cruelty and compassion up close in his work, and he writes about the timeless but still ever-changing bond between humans and animals. He explores how that bond has been broken in so many ways in the industrial era and presents ways we can all make a difference and live together in a more humane society.

Founded in 1954, The Humane Society of the United States is dedicated to combating cruelties to animals of a national scope through public education, promoting enforcement of humane laws, assisting local humane societies, conducting research and investigations, advocating for law reform, and changing corporate behavior. The HSUS and its affiliates also provide veterinary services to remote areas, rescue animals in natural disasters and incidents of large-scale cruelty, and operate a network of centers that directly care for thousands of animals each year. The HSUS family of organizations is supported by more than 11 million people nationwide. Learn more at www.humanesociety.org, and join the humane movement.
